About 251Check
Fact-checking for informed and peaceful communities.
251Check is an Ethiopian fact-checking platform by Positive Peace Ethiopia. We verify claims, clarify rumours, and make credible information accessible to help people make informed decisions and share responsibly. Our work supports PPE’s commitment to mitigating misinformation and hate speech, strengthening trust, and advancing positive peace.
What we do
Check viral claims
We investigate claims, images and videos circulating in Amharic and English, and publish clear verdicts with every source linked.
Train fact-checkers
Through the HaqSemi Fellowship, we train journalists and young people to verify information. More than 100 people have been trained so far.
Build media literacy
We help communities recognise misinformation and hate speech, and check before they share.

People trained in fact-checking so far
Through the HaqSemi Fellowship, we train journalists and young people to verify information, spot misinformation and hate speech, and help their communities share facts, not rumours.
Who we are
251Check is the fact-checking platform of Positive Peace Ethiopia (PPE), a youth-led, nationally registered civil society organisation established in September 2021 and based in Addis Ababa. We work to strengthen access to credible information and address the harm caused by misinformation and hate speech, both online and within communities.
Combining fact-checking, media literacy, and digital peacebuilding, we verify public claims, clarify rumours, and explain our findings in clear, accessible language. Our work forms part of PPE’s wider commitment to positive peacebuilding: supporting informed decisions, encouraging responsible information sharing, and strengthening trust and mutual understanding across communities.
Why 251Check
Positive Peace Ethiopia created 251Check to advance one of its core priorities: mitigating misinformation and hate speech in a rapidly changing digital world. We recognise that false information and harmful narratives can deepen divisions, erode trust, and fuel conflict within communities. Through fact-checking, rumour clarification, and media literacy, 251Check makes credible information more accessible and encourages people to engage with and share information responsibly.
For PPE, this work contributes to the broader goal of positive peacebuilding: helping people make informed decisions, strengthening trust across communities, and creating space for dialogue grounded in facts and mutual respect.
