Misleading

This image does not show a recent surrender of OLA fighters in Horo Guduru Wollega

The image was previously circulated in September 2025 in reports about the surrender of OLA fighters.

Misleading

The photograph is old. It was reused to present a September 2025 event as a recent development in August 2026.

Claim being checked

A Facebook post by The Finfinne Insider, shared on August 26, 2026, claims that members of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), led by Jaal Yadesa and operating in Horo Guduru Wollega Zone, recently surrendered to the government along with their weapons. The claim is FALSE.

The post presents the surrender as a recent development and uses an image purportedly showing the fighters handing over their weapons.

The evidence

However, verification findings show that the image is not recent.

A Google reverse image search traced the same image to posts and reports published in September 2025, nearly a year before the Facebook post in question.

A Facebook post by Demeke Negassa Kube, published on September 28, 2025, shared the same image and reported that OLA members led by Jaal Yaaddeessaa had surrendered with their weapons in Shambu Town, Horo Guduru Wollega Zone.

The Oromia Sports and Youth Bureau also published the same image on September 29, 2025, in connection with the surrender of OLA fighters in the area.

Reports by BBC Afaan Oromo and Addis Standard Afaan Oromo also reported on the surrender of OLA fighters in Horo Guduru Wollega in September 2025.

Why it matters

Recycled images can give a false picture of what is happening today. When a photo from September 2025 is presented as news from August 2026, readers may believe a new development has taken place when it has not.

Claims about armed groups and surrenders in Oromia are sensitive. Inaccurate posts can shape how people understand the security situation, raise false hopes or fears among affected communities, and make it harder to trust genuine reports. Before sharing an image, check when and where it was first published.

Conclusion

These findings show that the photograph was old and reused to present a previous event as a recent development in August 2026.
